Hungary. Matthias/Mátyás Hunyadi ("Corvinus") (1458-1490)

AR denar (average fineness .500 AR; average weight .59023 g.); .41 g., 15.97 mm. max., 180°

Obv.: + mOnETA • mAThIE R VnGARI, four-part shield with Hungarian arms (Árpádian stripes, patriarchal cross, Dalmatian leopard heads, crowned lion of Berszterce), raven holding ring in its mouth within full escutcheon.

Rev.: • PATROn -- VnGARI •, veiled Madonna with nimbate infant Jesus to her right, K–P (mint/mint-master marks) in fields.

The type was struck from 1471-1481 (per Huszár, Unger and Frynas) or from 1472-1478 (per Pohl) or from 1472-1477 (per Gyöngyössy) in Kremnitz/Körmöcbánya/now Kremnica, Slovakia by Kammergraf Paul Peck (per Pohl) or by Kammergraf Paul Peck or Paul Modrár (per Gyöngyössy). According to Pohl, Peck was the kammergraf of the Kremnitz mint from 1472-1485, whereas Modrár is mentioned as kammergraf only in 1463.

Huszár/Pohl rarity 4, Unger rarity 40, Frynas rarity C. This is a variable type with two subtypes. Subtype A is the more common, with the obverse legend being + MOnETA • MAThIE • R • VnGARIE (or a minor variant). They are described and/or depicted in all of the catalogs.
