Licinius - 6 examples from the same fake dies1825 viewsThis particular fake keeps returning to the market. The 6 specimens figured here have all been offered on eBay. The one on the lower right is out right now, seller ID fvecsey, eBay item #170031747637. I asked the seller and he insist he metal detected it in northern Hungary. If so, it was planted there. The lower left specimen is a "lead strike". All 6 specimens are from the same dies. The "coin" is a fantasy product, no similar genuine coin exists.
If you know of further specimens of this particular die pair, I would be grateful for images.

Wallachia, Mircea cel Batran (the Elder, the Old, "Dracula's grandpa") (1386-1418)1758 viewsAbout 50 "coins" are pictured here, but the number of these fakes in Romania and elsewhere is much, much bigger. I have precise information of one lot of about 700 such fakes, and unverified reports of a big lot of ~8,000. Fakes like these regularly appear on eBay, sold by various sellers. On the bottom of the image there is a coin I've broke with my own hand to see its structure. There are two halves tightly pressed together, and the edge is also pressed to disimulate the black line between halves.

Black Sea Cities cast fakes1282 viewsRecently I had opportunity to go through a group of about 60 Black Sea area bronzes (various cities of Macedon, Thrace and Moesia Inferior). The coins had a HEAVY, DARK patina with earthen encrustation. I could see that they were pretty good quality, and make out the reverse types. I selected and bought TEN coins. When I brought them home I examined them under microscope and became suspicious. Then I began the cleaning process, and this is what I found EIGHT of TEN were fake! As you can see, these are CAST forgeries, struck in a yellowish bronze very much like they are supposed to look.
The edges are filed.

Constantine Campgate Reproductions704 viewsFrom the image I can deduce that these are cast. They were sold as reproductions, and can be identified by a flan problem at aprox 5:00 on the obverse. Probably wouldn't fool too many collectors when they got them in hand, but it's something to be aware of.

These three coins were sold on German Ebay in Sept. 2005 for 30.50 Euros by antika99. Since obviously one buyer bought many fake coins at a time, they will probably be resold.

This forgery demonstrates that even inexpensive coins may be copied. It also demonstrates that it takes some skill to make a good copy. The style and fabric of this coin is wrong. If there was only one, it may have passed as a barbaric fake but it was marked with a large group of fake uncleaned coins.

Example of uncleaned fakes which turned up enmasse in 2003, believed to have originated in Bulgaria. Quickly identified by the crude style, although originally thought to be Barbaric Imitations when first few appeared. Image courtesy Bob Bischoff at Petroni Coins
