Fig 1 is the false coin - 27.11g
Fig A is genuine ex (Kunstfreund) 142 and the Montagu collection

The two coins basically share the same obverse die but the new product differs in many details from its model. The most striking feature is the velvety surface and shallow relief. The border of dots is made of oblong, unevenly placed beads instead of round, well set-off pellets. On the original the spear heads touch the border of dots, as doe the tip of the horse's tail, and the spear butts just reach the border of dots on the left side; on the counterfeit, the spear heads and the tail stop well within the field and the butts merge with the border of dots.

Many details are altered or recut in the false die, such as the horseman's profile and the mane of the horse. Moreover the die-break between the horse's hind part and the tail has been removed, the tail becoming too thin in the process and no longer touching the border of dots. Other details as the ribbons of the petasus, the part of the bridle between the bit and the horse's neck, the hooves, especially the hind one, and the dog's fur are lost.

On the reverse the outer edges of the incuse are too deep and too steep, the square itself is too regular.

Fig 5a is the false coin - 14.90g
Fig 5b is genuine from Berlin - 14.27g
Fig 5c is genuine from Cambridge Mass. - 14.25g

This coin is part of what IAPN/BOC coined as the British Museum Forgers (BMF) production. These are coins based on electrotypes of coins from the British Museum (BM) that have been used to create new dies that have been enhanced in various ways. These coins are considered dangerous counterfeits and caused a lot of embarrassment amongst dealers in the mid-late 1980s when they made it through onto the market.

Whilst being dangerous they all share certain characteristics:-
a) the relief on the coin type is much more rounded and fuller than on the original coin and is often higher
b) many of the coins show no sign of any real wear but lack sharpness giving the impression of being weakly struck
c) the coin is known in an example from the same dies in the BM collection
d) the coin differs in very small ways and these changes are areas of either wear or damage on the BM coin
e) the area of join between the coin type and the flan is never really sharp
f) on gold coins the fields tend to be perfectly flat with some wavyness or convexity on the reverse. The surfaces are so perfect they look like melted chocolate
g) the pattern of wear makes no sense with very clear details on areas which are higher in relief than more flat or worn ones

Dies for the forgery were from an original hoard coin. Many details are incorrect, hair curls on RHS of Apollo's head taper off before they should; the upper surfaces should be worn are not; all details are too soft.

Minted in Rome. Ca. 82 BC.
Reference:- Crawford 362/1; Sydenham 741; Mamilia 6.

A modern cast fake. This seller has a large variety of coins that appear to all be modern cast fakes. I have seen a few in hand and they are quite unconvincing in hand. The metal feels wrong and generally has artificial patination. The coins show casting pits and bubbles under magnification. There is an edge seam and there has been an attempt to obliterate this edge seam by filing the edge of the coin. All these factors are easily seen in hand. I have posted my own, more detailed images of the coin to the reports which is of greater resolution and the surface issues can be clearly seen.

The serrations on the serratus have been applied after casting and are not convincing, having very sharp edges.
