136 viewsDIADUMENIAN (218). Caesar (217-218). Aureus, 217-218, Rome (or Antioch?) M OPEL ANT DIADVMENIAN CAES. Bare-headed and draped bust, seen from the front. Rs: PRINC IVVENTVTIS. Diadumenian standing left, in military garb, head right, holding standard, on the right two more standards. Calicó II, 2982 var. (Bust); RIC 101; Cohen 2 var. (Bust); BMCRE 83a var. (Bust). 6,90g.

In 2017, Dr. Hubert Lanz created a competition for the 70 year anniversary of Numismatik Lanz and to advertise the importance of their guarantee of authenticity. To win, people had to find a forgery that had been put in the auction catalogue on purpose. The fake had, in fact, been positioned plainly visible as an enlarged image on the back page of the catalogue! It is a modern imitation of an aureus of Diadumenian. Everyone who submitted lot 237 by email received a credit note for 25 euros for the auction!

Antoninus Pius 58 viewsOffered currently by reputable auction house as authentic, published as fogery from "modern dies" in bulletin IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 13 No.1 1988 Page 23 and
IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 20 No.1 1995 Page 28.
From pseudo hoard from Jordan "and there is only one pair of dies for each emperor".
But these are possibly still transfer die fakes and the usage of "modern dies" in bulletin missleading.
They have very smooth soapy details and a flat surface and no metal flow.

Shown in the Spanish Forum Imperio-Numismatico Jul 2011. Discussion concluded the fake is pressed using dies made using impressions of a genuine coin. However, it is more likely a cast.

You can see the edge of the authentic original coin on the reverse, between 12h to 8h, carried across in the die transfer process then impressed either off-centre, or on a larger diameter fake flan - very diagnostic of a fake of this type when evident.
