121,39 g - circa 37 x 29 mm
Fake sold ebay by a reputable german dealer on 15 Dec 2010, sold for 263 eur.
The seller described this as:
"Fragment of an ingot, decorated with birds, light-green patina; Thurlow-Vecchi 23"
The type is clearly not cast, but tooled.
Moreover the type is a fantasy, the birds on Thurlow-Vecchi 23 are totally different.

Akragas, Ar Tetradrachm, c. 450 BC226 viewsObv:- Eagle with closed wingsstanding left.
Rev:- Crab.
Fig 1 is the false coin - 17.27g
Fig 2 is genuine - ex "Kunstfreund"

Struck from modern dies. The obverse die is too large and flat. Generally, the letters in the original are confidently, but lightly made; in the counterfeit die they are recut and have a thicker, less graceful, more regular appearnce. Note the letter N; it is recut with the vertical strokes nearly the same length in the counterfeit; on the original the left stroke id only half as long as the right one. The head and neck of the bird have been touched up in the new die and have become slimmer in the process.

The reverse incuse is deeper than on any of the published speciments of this die. The die break on the edge of the incuse below the crab which occurs on all these specimens has been tooled off in the counterfeit die.

At higher resolution, one can see clear casting pits. There is evidence that the obverse has been tooled to remove casting flaws. The devices and lettering are soft. This Toronto Group forgery was offered under the name "Oceans purity".

Antoninus Pius Sestertius - RIC III 1004332 viewsObverse: ANTONINVSAVG PIVS PP TRP XXII. Antoninus Pius, Laureate, facing right
Reverse: TEMPLVMDIV AVG REST COS IIII S C, octastyle temple with Augustus and Livia. Unlike the authentic/unmodified coin (as pictured in RIC III, plate VI 114), the Augustus in this thing is hilariously waving at the viewer in this coin. Who knew the Princeps was such a friendly guy?

Sold on eBay on 12/29/2010 for $710 by moonstone_lovely, where it was misidentified as RIC 787 (a rare coin). This coin instead loosk like RIC 1004 (which is more merely scarce according to RIC III). In the opinion of Forvm experts, this coin is at best heavily tooled and repatinated, and most likely the underlying coin that was damaged to make this thing may not have even been an authentic sestertius.

Caracalla and Julia Domna Markianopolis349 viewsCaracalla and "Julia Donna," Markianopolis, Moesia Inferior, Quintilianus magistrate. Conceivably the die-maker meant to picture Caracalla with Geta and not Julia Domna in spite of the legend; anyway, compared with actual Markianopolis coins these are both bizarre portraits.

Definitely tooled. Pehaps from a geniune coin with some detail, perhaps from a genuine slug, perhaps from a modern cast to hide the fact that it was cast.

Clearly Tooled - Mr. Tooly1588 viewsIf you were not sure what tooling is. This coin should make it obvious. It appears most of this coin's "design" was scratched into a near slug. Tooling is done to increase the value of the coin. If detected it actually decreases the value. Before or after, this coin wasn't worth much.

This coin has been nicknamed "Mr. Tooly" and many discussion board members find it amusing. It is certainly useful for defining the word toooling.
