Artificial Patina - Fake Black Patina Common on Sicilian Fakes131 viewsBronze dilitron, Calciati II p. 185, 80; SNG ANS 533 ff.; SNG Morcom 717; SNG Munchen 1159; SNG Lloyd 1456; BMC Sicily p. 189, 311; HGC 2 1439 (S), F, well centered, green patina, edge crack, light corrosion, Syracuse mint, 344 - 336 B.C.; obverse ZEYΣ EΛEYΘEPIOΣ, laureate head of Zeus Eleutherios left; reverse ΣYPAKOΣION, free horse prancing left; scarce

Reported by Din X who first suspected it due to the fake black patina. This black patina is used by forgers who make cast fakes, most often of attractive larger Sicilian bronze coins. The patina first appears to be thick, but is actually thin and worn on high points. This sometimes indicates a fake patina that should be carefully examined. This coin was confirmed fake by identical twins.

Becker - Selection of Fakes173 viewsA selection of 285 Becker fakes offered in iNumis Auction V (10 December 2010) lot 14

Starting price: 2000 €
Estimation: 2500 €

Joe Sermarini: Becker made many replicas of Syracuse tets. The flans for his replicas do not have the flan casting sprues that most genuine Syracuse tets have. A casting sprue is usually seen as an indicator of a fake, but for Syracuse tets the sprue created when casting the flan is normally still evident after striking.

Bruttium Rhegion fake dies and match76 viewsBruttium, Rhegion. Fake dies and match
Modern dies sold on ebay by seller "soldatoconfederato" in January 2013. He states that the dies were manufactured in the 50's.
Note that the dies are worn and broken, they may have been used to forge hundreds of fake coins!

The reported coin was accepted as authentic by two reputable auction houses, on april 1984 and on may 2002. It was clearly struck with the fake dies (see dots around lion).

Restored file after hacker attack against this board.

Comments from the old deleted report:
Note: some expert users of this forum do not agree with the hypothesis of die matching, in their opinion maybe this coin was used to make this die, not the other way around. Comment by FORVM user bpmurphy: "Several problems with this die being used to strike this coins.

1 - on the coin, the border of dots behind Apollo's head are just touching the edge of the flan. On the die, these same dots are very weak or non-existent in the same location. Also to the upper right of the lion you see the border of dots dissappear on the coin and the die. In order for the die to have made this coin. the flan would have had to be centered slightly off in souch a way that the border of dots just touched the edge of the flan. Not likeley.

2 - Above Apollo's head at 11:00 there is a small notch in the flan. This marks shows up on the die too but just as a small line outside the border of dots. Not only did the border of dots have to line up as explained in point 1 above, but the notch in the flan had to line up with the small line on the die.

3 - Above Apollo's head at 1:00 there is a die break or flan flaw. This also appears on the die but is much smaller and not as deep.

4 - look at the hair of the lion, particularly the four tufts of hair on the upper right side. There is much more detail and depth then this die could have ever created.

5 - The lines around the lion's nose are deeper on the coin than on the die.

6- Apollo's neck line is much deeper than on the die.

7 - there are die polishing marks behind Apollo's head and before her head that appear on the die and not on the coin.

8 -Significantly more detail in Apollo's hair at the back of her head on the coin than on the die.

9- The knot that ties the laurel wreath is missing on the die but present on the coin"

Some other FORVM users instead are not inclined to dismiss this die-matching, looking at how these dies have been processed after use in order to enhance their presentation for sale (look also at the other dies reported, making a search in the fake reports for "soldatoconfederato"). Comment by FORVM user Lloyd T: "These dies are interesting in many ways and warrant closer examination and analysis, particularly when comparing to potentially die matched coins struck from them. They appear to be of a bronze alloy rather than steel. As a result, they are likely to wear quite rapidly unless they have been case hardened, a point impossible to tell from the images. They show genuine signs of wear such as the die break transecting the reverse die of the Syracuse, second from bottom image. Moreover, few have complete border design in evidence and all the die edges have been extensively rounded-off. It appears that without exception that all have been polished and burnished to varying degrees so as to enhance presentation for sale, possibley removing some of the border detail that would be otherwise be present on the original working form of the die, while potentially adding scour and polishing marks to the die.

On some of the dies it appears that a considerable amount of metal has been removed in an attempt to enhance their appearance for sale, to the extent that some of the the more lightly engraved elements of design have been reduced or removed.

The evidence of die wear and post-use burnishing and polishing makes conclusions drawn from the form and detail of the beaded border/circumference of die matched coins equivocal at best. Perimeter design elements may have been lost or reduced during wear of the die either while in use and/or due to the evident burnishing and polishing of the used dies preparatory to their sale.

Given that these dies are said to have been made in the fifties, it is clear that the bright shiney bronze of the fields, in contrast to dull and in some areas verdigris covered engraved design, indicates that the burnishing and polishing of the dies is recent (i.e. yesterday).

My conclusion is that what you see by way of design elements close to the circumference/edge of the dies may not be representative of what was there when the die was originally put into use. Similarly burnishing and reshaping of the die edges and surface field areas may add marks or elements missing from from the fields of the coins formerly struck from the dies. The more heavily burnished examples show evidence of a significant removal of the die surface, to the extent that lightly engraved design elements are reduced or may have been removed.

This is a caution for those inclined to dismiss otherwise identical die matched coins to these dies... you need to take to account in your analysis of how these dies have been processed after use, but preparatory to sale in order to enhance their presentation for sale. "
