After the murder of Emperor Pertinax, Didius Julianus gave the Praetorian Guard who had assassinated his predecessor Pertinax 25,000 sestertii a man and was declared Emperor. This led to the Roman civil war of 192-197. Septimius Severus advanced on Rome and ousted Julianus and sentenced him to death. His reign lasted only 66 days,
