Antoninos Ephesos160 viewsCast fake . IONIA. Ephesus. Caracalla (197-217 A.D.). AE 35 , Ephesus Mint, ca.197-217 A.D. Laureate cuirassed bust right, Greek legend around; Reverse: Two temples in three-quarter view towards each other within which are statutes of Artemis Leukophrene and Artemis Ephesia.
Helvetica Commented: Massive numbers of these fakes are coming out of Eastern Europe, often sold by unscrupulous sellers in Germany who know damn well that they are fakes. (Fake: emperor's name incorrect; the city name of Magnesia has been changed to Newkoron). See another example and the detailled explanation on wildwinds' Caracalla page under "Magnesia ad Meandrum Schultz 169 FAKE" quadrans

commodus noted: One of a late 20th century series of Italian tokens depicting facsimile obverses of coins of each Roman emperor and other Roman rulers and relations. The reverse of the token gives the name of the emperor/ruler in modern Italian (in this case CARACALLA IMPERATORE = "Caracalla, Emperor") and dates: dC = "dopo Christo" ("after Christ") and aC = "avanti Christo" ("before Christ"). The dates given on the token in question are for Caracalla's full lifetime. maridvnvm

Caracalla143 viewsAnother non-existent fantasy. This time Caracalla is the victim.
This obverse legend ANTONINVS AVG PONT TR P IIII was used on one single gold coin coin of Caracalla and one single silver coin, and for nobody else. The gold Aureus had Victory on the reverse, the silver denarius had the bust of Geta.
In addition, it is very unlikely that he would have used the Pudicitia reverse for his coinage as it is a reverse generally used for womens' coins. And a ponce he was not !
This object is a fake.

Caracalla101 viewsObv: ANTONINVS PIVS AVGG BRIT, radiate, draped bust right
Rev: P M TR P XVIIII COS IIII P P, Serapis standing facing, holding sceptre, right hand raised.
Supposed to be silver.
1. Caracalla did not use the AVGG on his obverse legends.
2. Caracalla began using the word BRIT (for Britannia) on his coins from 211 AD.
3. It looks like the person who made it started to make the obverse legend ANTONINVS PIVS AVG G(ERM) then changed it at the last moment to the ending of (B)RIT. However, the AVG GERM legend was not used until 215, so 4 years after the BRIT series and it is unlikely that a genuine mint engraver would make a mistake like this.
4. This object is supposed to represent Serapis (RIC 216) but the person who made it forgot to add Serapis's modius (on his head). No genuine engraver of genuine dies would ever forget to engrave the modius on Serapis' head. The modius is the single, most important and distinctive feature of Serapis.
5. The spacing of the lettering is very uneven. Genuine coins have the legends well balanced with about the same number of letters on the left and on the right. On this object you have 12 letters on the left and only 8 on the right with large gaps between the last letters to fill the space.
