Agrippa As178 viewsSelling as a replica on Ebay, 2011

Sellers info:
Agrippa AE As Roman Imperial Coin
Struck under Caligula, 37-41 AD
Agrippa son of Lucius.
Close friend of Augustus from boyhood. A renowned commander by both land and sea. He won the famous battle of Actium against Marc Anthony and Cleopatra (B.C. 31). Agrippa married Julia, daughter of Augustus and was destined by Augustus to succeed him as emperor but died in Campanina on his return from Pannonia in 12 B.C. at aged 51 years. The remains of Agrippa were interred in the Mausoleum of Augustus.
Obverse: Head of Agrippa, (M) AGRIPPA L. F. COS. III
Reverse: S. C., Neptune standing, holding dolphin in his right hand and in his left hand a trident.
Diameter: 28 mm
The coin is stamped on the reverse with the word copy.

ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P (TR P XX II)
TEMPLVM DIV AVG REST, S C, COS IIII in ex. temple of Augustus and Livia.
30.60 x 30.00 mm. 26.63 g

The huge giveaway signs are the letters on the reverse.
They all have an indentation around the letters. These indentation are caused by blocks of metal with letters on them which were used to stamp the letters into the metal.
On genuine coins the letters were hand-engraved into the die, and struck together with the rest of the image in one work job, not stamped separately.
Another giveaway are the figures on the reverse. There should only be Augustus and Livia, and not have a child between them.

Antoninus Pius Sestertius - RIC III 1004332 viewsObverse: ANTONINVSAVG PIVS PP TRP XXII. Antoninus Pius, Laureate, facing right
Reverse: TEMPLVMDIV AVG REST COS IIII S C, octastyle temple with Augustus and Livia. Unlike the authentic/unmodified coin (as pictured in RIC III, plate VI 114), the Augustus in this thing is hilariously waving at the viewer in this coin. Who knew the Princeps was such a friendly guy?

Sold on eBay on 12/29/2010 for $710 by moonstone_lovely, where it was misidentified as RIC 787 (a rare coin). This coin instead loosk like RIC 1004 (which is more merely scarce according to RIC III). In the opinion of Forvm experts, this coin is at best heavily tooled and repatinated, and most likely the underlying coin that was damaged to make this thing may not have even been an authentic sestertius.

Athens Greece, Silver Tetradrachm, British Museum Electrotype Replica126 viewsBritish Museum Electrotype Replica Robert or Augustus Ready, c. 1850 - 1910, Athens Tetradrachm

Silver tetradrachm, Replica of Athens Early Transitional Style; c. 393 - 355 B.C.; references for original prototype: SNG München 90; SNG Delepierre 1470; SGCV I 2537, no RR edge stamp, no COPY stamp, electrotype seam (see photo), 16.394 grams, 22.8 mm, die axis 270o, obverse head of Athena right with eye seen in true profile, wearing crested helmet ornamented with three olive leaves and floral scroll; reverse owl standing right, head facing, to right AΘE in large lettering, to left olive sprig and crescent.

This electroplate (electrotype) replica was probably made by Robert Ready or his son Augustus Ready at British Museum, c. 1850 - 1910. Robert Ready made electrotype replicas, beginning c. 1850`s. His son, Augustus Ready, became the electrotypist at the British Museum after death of his father in 1901.

Electroplate replica are very exact copies. Often the only way an electroplate replica can be differentiated from the genuine original is a seam on the edge and the weight.

Collectible as an antique replica.

Augustus180 viewsI believe (and certainly hope!) that this coin sold today on eBay is a fake.
It sold for £53, while it's catalogue value if genuine is nearer £9000.
The surface colour seems uneven, with possibly a hint of base metal showing
through the gold colouring.

Obverse: AVGVSTVS CAESAR, Bare head R.
Reverse: Flat field with AVGVSTO IMPERATORE 63 a.C. 14 d.C.
19 x 20mm, 3.9g.

commodus noted: One of a late 20th century series of Italian tokens depicting facsimile obverses of coins of each Roman emperor and other Roman rulers and relations. The reverse of the token gives the name of the emperor/ruler in modern Italian (in this case AVGOSTO IMPERATORE = "Augustus, Emperor") and dates: dC = "dopo Christo" ("after Christ") and aC = "avanti Christo" ("before Christ"). The dates given on the token in question are for Augustus's full lifetime.
