x-agrippa.jpg
Agrippa320 viewsAppears to be a modern struck copy of the Agrippa As:
10.84 g, 27.68 mm.
Agrippa, AE As. Struck under Caligula, 37-41 AD. M AGRIPPA L F COS III, head left wearing rostral crown / S-C, Neptune standing facing, head left, naked except for cloak draped behind him and over both arms, holding dolphin in right hand and vertical trident in left.
RIC 58; Cohen 3; Sear 1812.
Reasons that I believe this to be a fake:
1) File marks visible at the top around the edge.
2) The dolphin's tail has three parts, whereas on genuine coins it only has two, as it does in real life.
3) Dots all over the reverse which do not appear on any genuine versions that I have seen (e.g. to the left and right and beneath the bottom edge of the chlamys which is hanging down on the left and beneath the bottom edge of the chlamys which is hanging down on the right)
4) The side edges of the chlamys part on the left appear to be missing.
5) There is an additional slightly sloping line going from beneath his left armpit (i.e. on the right of the image) towards the C which should not be there.

Agrippina I158 views36.37 mm, 25.62 g. Agrippina I. Struck under Claudius, ca AD 42-43. Obv: AGRIPPINA M F GERMANICI CAESARIS, draped bust right. Rev: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP P P around large SC.
RIC 102; BMC 219; Cohen 3; Sear 1906.
The shape of the head, especially the jowls, is incorrect and the lettering too large. The letters were "engraved" using the same punches as most of the other fakes from this batch, offered to an auction house in England together with a number of other modern, struck fakes, in Sept/Oct 2014.

Alexander III253 viewsSilvered AE fake of Alexander III Tetradrachm, imitating Price 89; SNG Cop 674.
Obv: Head of young Herakles right wearing lion's skin.
Rev. Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and sceptre,
crescent in left field.
Some characteristics:
- the name of Alexander begins AAE.. instead of A Lambda E
- the O of Alexander's name is too large (should be not much bigger than a dot)
- the dots around the edge are too "modern"
- silver worn away on both sides of the coin
- base metal showing through
- the crescent is more curved than the original

Obv : Head of Spring right, wearing neck-band of flowers
Rev : S C within wreath of flowers

The head on the obverse has been identified as Annius Verus, a son of Marcus Aurelius (Cohen). Van Heesch, in Studia Paulo Naster Oblata I, pp. 193-197, distinguished four types of busts in the series, and connects them with representations of the four seasons.

Artificial Patina - Variations on the Same Fake Type415 viewsThe first two coins are cast and artificially patinated. They came to FORVM from two different consignors about the same time, one coin originating on UK ebay. The third image is CNG 158, lot 23. It looks extremely convincing and it is possibly the original from which the fakes were cast rather than a third copy.

The patina of the first specimen is identical to the patina we found on other cast fake sestertii, several of which are are already listed here.

Bronze AE 23, SNG Stancomb 310, SNG BM Black Sea -, VF, nice green patina, weight 10.371g, maximum diameter 23.7mm, die axis 0o, Kallatis? mint, obverse veiled bust of Demeter right, countermark of head of satyr right; reverse BASILEWS KANITOU, torch left and stalk of grain right

Ataias. Kingdom of the Scythians.35 viewsKingdom of the Scythians. Ataias. 358-339 b.C.
Head of Heracles, wearing lion skin l. / ΑΤΑΙΑΣ, King on horseback l., holding bow.

This coin to be a modern casting for the following reasons:

- Patina appears to follow flow lines indicative of a liquid (see arrow A).
- General reduced resolution of details.
- Reduction of certain fine features in relief protected areas not attributable to wear (see arrow C).
- Some relief exposed details are enlarged (see arrow B).
- Large features missing or reduces (see arrow D)
- Profile of the coin edge is the same as the attribution sample. Possibly the mold was made from the very coin they are citing for authenticity (see arrow E).
