Bust: Pearl-diademed, draped, wearing necklace and ear-rings, right
Rev: No legend
Cross within wreath
Exe: CONOB*
Mint: Ravenna/Constantinople
Weight: 1.47 g
Date: 430s
Ref: RIC 10 2062/2068 (matches neither)

Free-hand copy offered for sale by major German auction house in February 2012. The style of engraving and lettering gives this away in the first instance, but it is condemned by the fact that it combines a western obverse with an eastern reverse (has CONOB* but should be COMOB).

Photo compares subject forgery with real Honoria tremissis (for obverse) and real Eudocia tremissis (for reverse)

I have identified two other copies of this type from recent European auctions (see following photos).

Honorius_A14.jpg
Honorius solidus- Western Eastern mismatch107 viewsObv.: D N HONORI - VS P F AVG
Bust, facing right, draped and cuirassed, pearl-diademed

Rev.: CONCORDI - AAVGG I / CONOB
Constantinopolis enthroned facing, head r., holding sceptre and Victory on globe, her r. foot on prow; star in left field

Obverse is a Milan type, RIC X 1209 looks the closest (AD 402)
Reverse is Constantinople type from reign of Theodosius, RIC X 201 (AD 408-420)

The style is a dead giveaway of forgery, even if the coin had the proper obverse or reverse. The obverse is from the same fake die as the other Honorius solidi I have posted here and was condemned as a forgery in BoC 21.2 (1996/1997), p. 29. The reverse is from the same die as was used for a solidus of Theodosius II condemned as a forgery in BOC 2.4 (1977), p. 93.

Another copy of this impossible coin, sold with fake solidus of Valentinian II as detectorist finds from Britain.

From eBay (04/09). Sold by Notorious Fake Seller Saxby Coins.
