x-agrippa.jpg
Agrippa321 viewsAppears to be a modern struck copy of the Agrippa As:
10.84 g, 27.68 mm.
Agrippa, AE As. Struck under Caligula, 37-41 AD. M AGRIPPA L F COS III, head left wearing rostral crown / S-C, Neptune standing facing, head left, naked except for cloak draped behind him and over both arms, holding dolphin in right hand and vertical trident in left.
RIC 58; Cohen 3; Sear 1812.
Reasons that I believe this to be a fake:
1) File marks visible at the top around the edge.
2) The dolphin's tail has three parts, whereas on genuine coins it only has two, as it does in real life.
3) Dots all over the reverse which do not appear on any genuine versions that I have seen (e.g. to the left and right and beneath the bottom edge of the chlamys which is hanging down on the left and beneath the bottom edge of the chlamys which is hanging down on the right)
4) The side edges of the chlamys part on the left appear to be missing.
5) There is an additional slightly sloping line going from beneath his left armpit (i.e. on the right of the image) towards the C which should not be there.

Picture 1 fake condemned by Reid Goldsborough
Picture 2 fake sold by US auction from same dies.

Reid Goldsborough : "Lebanese School" forgery No. 3 of an Alexander III tetradrachm, weight unknown. The styling of the obverse of this fake is similar to the fake documented in the Bulletin on Counterfeits, Vol. 5, No. 1/2 (1980), Specimen No. 6, and appears to have been cut by the same hand. The reverse is similar to Specimen No. 11.

Obv : Head of Spring right, wearing neck-band of flowers

The head on the obverse has been identified as Annius Verus, a son of Marcus Aurelius (Cohen). Van Heesch, in Studia Paulo Naster Oblata I, pp. 193-197, distinguished four types of busts in the series, and connects them with representations of the four seasons.

Caracalla - Plated antoninianus purporting to be aureus30 viewsPlated Caracalla antoninianus, passed off as an aureus.

ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P, Jupiter, naked, standing right, holding thunderbolt and sceptre.
Plated version of RIC 258a; Cohen 279.
The "gold" plating has peeled off at numerous places on the obverse and reverse, revealing the bronze or billon core.

Sent to wildwinds for identification, March 2020.

No genuine gold coin was struck for Caracalla with this reverse image for this bust type.
This bronze or billon antoninianus, has been plated by someone, in order to deceive an inexperienced buyer.
