Obv : Head of Spring right, wearing neck-band of flowers
Rev : S C within wreath of flowers

The head on the obverse has been identified as Annius Verus, a son of Marcus Aurelius (Cohen). Van Heesch, in Studia Paulo Naster Oblata I, pp. 193-197, distinguished four types of busts in the series, and connects them with representations of the four seasons.

Cf : van Heesch Taf. XXV,7; RIC II S. 219, 34 (Var.); C. VIII S. 270, 31 (Var)

Augustus72 viewsAVGVSTVS DIVI F, laureate head right.
AVGVS F beneath Caius Caesar on horseback galloping right, legionary eagle between two standards to left.

Modern fake copy of Augustus, RIC 199.

1) the surface on both sides is very pitted and shows air bubbles - especially on Augustus' cheek and neck, as well as above the third letter at the bottom of the reverse.
2) On the reverse, the lower parts of the masts of the two standards: one is bent, the other does not line up.
3) The legionary eagle between those two standards has no lower mast at all and is just floating in the air.
4) Augustus' neck is too narrow.
5) At top right of the obverse, the beaded border turns into small crescents, usually caused by using a small tube to make the "beads" in a fake die.
6) Augustus' forehead is missing and simply bulges inwards, so the faker very likely took a cast of a worn coin.
7) On the reverse - the letters at the bottom should be larger, clearer and better spaced. They should read AVGVS F. Here they appear to be AVGVT.. On this coin, if you complete the A, the right hand \\ of the A would also form the \\ of the V. Such a ligation was not used on these coins.

Purchased from roman.land (already on the Forum Fake Sellers list) by an wildwinds user in the US at the end in May 2020. Refund has been requested.

Fig 20a is the false coin - 7.92g
Fig 20b is genuine from London - 7.96g (photo from cast)
Fig 20c is genuine silver denarius from the same pair of dies - ex Ars Classica 17, 1934. Lot 1226

This coin is part of what IAPN/BOC coined as the British Museum Forgers (BMF) production. These are coins based on electrotypes of coins from the British Museum (BM) that have been used to create new dies that have been enhanced in various ways. These coins are considered dangerous counterfeits and caused a lot of embarrassment amongst dealers in the mid-late 1980s when they made it through onto the market.

Whilst being dangerous they all share certain characteristics:-
a) the relief on the coin type is much more rounded and fuller than on the original coin and is often higher
b) many of the coins show no sign of any real wear but lack sharpness giving the impression of being weakly struck
c) the coin is known in an example from the same dies in the BM collection
d) the coin differs in very small ways and these changes are areas of either wear or damage on the BM coin
e) the area of join between the coin type and the flan is never really sharp
f) on gold coins the fields tend to be perfectly flat with some wavyness or convexity on the reverse. The surfaces are so perfect they look like melted chocolate
g) the pattern of wear makes no sense with very clear details on areas which are higher in relief than more flat or worn ones

This coin is so marvellous looking that no one wanted it to be fake. By using a denarius from the same die pair we can see that the hair above the ear has not been properly re-cut to make it look less worn. Several other details including some lettering differ from the denarius and all combined are enough to condemn the coin.
