Julia Mamaea72 viewsJulia Mamaea, AE20. 2.84 gr.
IVLIA MA-MAEA AVG, draped bust right
AEQVITAS, Deity supposed to be Aequitas standing left holding patera (!) and sceptre.
Sold on ebay in Jan. 2010 for £4.36 by seller persis1957-36.
Reasons:
Obverse:
1) The lettering is very poorly engraved with only the AVG part correctly legible.
2) The drapery is wrong - women did not use this kind of clasp or ring fibula at the shoulder - they were used only by men.
3) The face is wrong for Mamaea, it is too boyish, more like Geta or young Caracalla.
Reverse:
1) Aequitas is shown here with a patera and sceptre - whereas Aequitas = Equality should be holding scales.
2) Mamaea did not use the Aequitas reverse.
3) The beaded surrounding changes from dots to semi-crescents.
4) The hat on her hat is too "exaggerated".
5) Aequitas coins usually have the abbreviation AVG following the name of the deity.
Uploaded by Helvetica for the buyer.
