Pacatianus, Antoninianus, RIC 6382 viewsObv: IMP TI CL MAR PACATIANVS AVG
Bust: Radiate, draped bust right
Rev: ROMAE AETER AN MILL ET PRIMO
Rome seated left holding Victory and spear
Weight: 6.63 g
Die rotation: 130° (Other Pacatianus examined have a die rotation of around 157°)
Ref: RIC 6, RSC 7
Sold on Ebay as authentic coin. Questioned by Forvm members, later determined by bpmurphy to be modern forgery, with the following observations:
My findings:
1) The coin is a cast. There are no flow lines on the coin, the lettering and details are all weak. At 9:00 on the reverse there are traces of a flan crack, but the flan is not cracked, it is a remnant from the host coin. There is a die break on the obverse at about 10:30 that extends from the radiate crown, through the lettering across the border of dots and to the edge of the flan. The apparent porosity on the reverse and around the protrait is not porosity but roughness from the casting.
2) the "coin" weighs 6.63 gm which is too heavy for this issue, much heavier than other recorded specimens. Pacatians typically weigh between 3.2 and 4.5 gms.
3) The toning is fake and rubs off with my fingers.
4) The "coin" appears to have been cast in a metal other than silver. I didn't do a specific gravity to be certain but it doesn't ring like silver should.
5) The "coin" is of even thickness all the way around. Struck coins tend to have a thicker side and thinner side depending on the angle of strike.
6) There are traces of a scratch on the reverse from the edge at 6:00 to the middle of the coin that appears to have been copied from the original.
The piece is interesting to me though, as both dies can be accounted for on other Pacatians. This is apparently a cast of an authentic coin that I was not familiar with and I have added this to my photo file, with a note of course that this coin is a cast.
