a black sea fakes.jpg
Black Sea Cities cast fakes1282 viewsRecently I had opportunity to go through a group of about 60 Black Sea area bronzes (various cities of Macedon, Thrace and Moesia Inferior). The coins had a HEAVY, DARK patina with earthen encrustation. I could see that they were pretty good quality, and make out the reverse types. I selected and bought TEN coins. When I brought them home I examined them under microscope and became suspicious. Then I began the cleaning process, and this is what I found EIGHT of TEN were fake! As you can see, these are CAST forgeries, struck in a yellowish bronze very much like they are supposed to look.
The edges are filed.

Green glossy MAT effect copper patina -1168 viewsOn this coin the patina gives a strong glossy effect, and the color is an identical natural green. The chemical reactions are carried out in normal enviroment and the copper carbonates and coproducts are absolutely identical to the natural types.
This kind of patina cannot be melted or washed out by solvents, such as acetone, Isopropyl alcohol, ethylic alcohol neither ether , exane or benzen.

Macrinus, Limes (bronze) denarius180 viewsobv. IMP C M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG, Bust laureate, cuirassed, r.
rev. PONTIF MAX TR P II COS II P P, Emperor in quadriga l., holding palmbranch, crowned by Victory standing behind him
Ø 19 mm, 2.87 g.

Curtis Clay noted: I suspect of being a modern cast, since this is now the fifth spec. that I have seen since 1991! Whether an ancient or a modern cast, it attests the existence of a genuine denarius which is unpublished in that denomination with TR P II not just TR P.

Nero~1.jpg
Style Errors on a Fake Nero Aureus1330 viewsNero coins are well known for being of the finest style and an aureus die is probably the most important one. This fake can be detected by its poor style.

Obverse: Bust of Nero is pushed forward too much. It should be more linear in a vertical position. Also it should have a slightly more rounded appearance.

Reverse: Headdress of Jupiter is wrong. Jupiter is too compact. The lettering on the left should be more spaced out to fill the area more. On real specimens the R almost reaches the head of Jupiter. Border should have distinct beads.
