Judaea63 viewsModern fake “false shekel” AR fantasy coin loosely imitating Judaean coinage types of the first century AD. Cast, 38mm.
One of the earlier modern "false shekel" types, this type is known as a "Meysel shekel" and is a forgery by or commissioned by Mordecai Meysel of Prague, Bohemia, 1584. Made at Prague
obv: (in Hebrew) SHEKEL OF ISRAEL censer with incense rising
rev: (in Hebrew) JERUSALEM THE HOLY rod of Aaron budding with almonds and leaves
Note that inscription is in modern Hebrew script.
The type served as a design model for most later "false shekel" types, both struck and cast.
cf: Kisch, Bruno: Historia Judaica, v3, no 2, pp67-101; Kisch type A.

Judaea72 viewsModern fake “false shekel” fantasy coin loosely imitating Judaean coinage types of the first century AD. 9.2g, 33mm. AR plated cast brass, made circa 1920
obv: (in Hebrew) SHEKEL OF ISRAEL censer with incense rising
rev: (in Hebrew) JERUSALEM THE HOLY rod of Aaron budding with almonds and leaves
Note that inscription is in modern Hebrew script.
So-called “false shekels” were produced (mostly) in Europe from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Some were produced as pilgrim mementos but many were made to deceive. The majority follow the design pattern seen here, though with variants, and they exist in a variety of metals.
cf: Kisch, Bruno: Historia Judaica, v3, no 2, pp67-101; Kisch no: D-1, D-4 (var)
