AUGUSTUS Sestertius223 viewsDIVUS AUGUSTUS. Died 14 AD. Æ Sestertius (24.12 g, 1h). Rome mint. Struck under Tiberius, 35-36 AD.

Mail from CNG:
"As you know, I have compared your Divus Augustus sestertius (M&M 95, lot 111 = SBV 28, lot 395) to the nearly identical coin in CNG 70, lot 724. Both coins are obviously so similar that either one is a cast of the other or both are casts from yet a third coin.

I have shown both coins to two experienced cleaners of bronze coins, Richard Swan and Giovanni Testa, each of whom has over 20 years experience in cleaning and consequently much experience of the surfaces and patinas of bronze coins. Mr. Swan and Mr. Testa are both of the opinion that the two coins are cast. I have examined the coins closely myself, and I agree with them."

Münzen und Medallien (auk 95 - lot 112). Returned one year later, it's an 18-19 th century cast forgery.
CNG 70, lot 724 (withdrawn, cast forgery with the same host coin), almost identical.
