Basilicus, Av Tremisses149 viewsObv:- D N BASILICVS P F AVG, Diademed, draped bust right
Rev:- Cross within wreath, COMOB in exe.
Fig 1 is the false coin 1.46 to 1.63g with one coin being as little as 1.18g

Part of a group of 60 examples to appear on the market in March 1987.

Cast or struck from cast dies. Traces of small holes and unevenness are caused by casting.
All the specimens are struck in the same way and show identical weak points.
The colour of the gold is darker than in normal coins of the period.
The weight of the coins range from 1.46 to 1.63g with a single example at 1.18g. These are generally too heavy from tremisses.
Even though the edges are not identical, they show a circle and flat fields where the model die, whose shape is unique, did not reach
The counterfeits were copied from the specimen illustrated by O. Ulrich-Bansa, Moneta Mediolanensis (1949), pl. 14, 174

Published in the IAPN BOC Vol 12, No. 1 in 1987 - example 1

lasta: Such coins of Constans are still offered in Vienna. At moment they are offered uncleaned and mixed in a lot of 6,000 pieces with the well known fakes of Carus and Probus for 3€/piece. All the coins have a dirty lime green patina. They were obviously devaluated so in order to sell them for a lower price than originally expected. This is a success of this excellent forum.
