Macrinus Denarius Liberalitas169 viewsThis denarius is already on the boards; I want to add it once more here because the surface and colour is quite different here, so it might be mistaken for a different coin; yet it's from the same dies. This one was sold as genuine in German Ebay for 53 Euros.

Macrinus Denarius Quadriga208 viewsFrom my own Black Cabinet:
Macrinus Denarius, unlisted in RIC, cast.
The rev. inscription PONTIF MAX TRP II COS II PP isn't known for this very rare type (only with TRP II COS PP). The piece is evidently cast, and I thought it was a Limesfalsum, but Curtis Clay examined the coin himself and is convinced that these coins (he saw several specimens showing up since the early 90's) are all modern reproductions, however proving that this type exists, since they are obviously casts from a genuine original.

RIC # 149, C # 84. Weight from 22.81 to 23.40 g.

Description: six coins with identical details were offered for sale in the last four years in various stores. These are certainly clones of the same coin. Note the lack on the edge height of the "V" of … AVG ... and the defect before the P of PONTIF ... of the reverse. Note also the proximity of the date of two similar coins (but not the same) in February 2010.

Fig 5A is the false coin - 6.62g
Fig 5B is a genuine coin, 7.23g. ex Bank Leu 10, 1974, 253

A counterfeit of a certain age. This coin is lot 2373 of the Trau auction (Gilhofer & Ranschburg/Hess, Vienna 1935). Comparison with a genuine aureus shows stylistic weaknesses and an amusing detail, that Fleicitas is twisting her arm around the staff of the caduceus instead of simply holding it.
