Antoninus Pius60 viewsAntoninus Pius, AR denarius, ancient imitation, RIC 220/229b/238/243 reverse with the earlier legend of Pius as Caesar under Hadrian.
IMP TR EL CES ANTONINVS, bare head right. (for IMP T AEL CAES HADR ANTONINVS).
COS IIII, Vesta standing left, holding patera over altar, and Palladium.
1) The obverse legend is incorrectly spelled.
2) The correct versions of this reverse image with COS IIII did not use use the ..T AEL legend.
3) the hairlines are too simply engraved and the general "look" of the face on the coin in hand is just not right.
4) the flames of the altar are engraved as three short lines instead of a flame
5) the figure of the Palladium (Pallas Athena holding shield and raising arm) is partially totally separated and engraved as though the engraver did not know what it should represent.
The reverse is listed under RIC 220/229b/238/243, depending on the tribunal date on the obverse of the genuine coins.
From an old Swiss collection.

IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 20 No.1 1995 Page 28.
From pseudo hoard from Jordan "and there is only one pair of dies for each emperor".
But these are possibly still transfer die fakes and the usage of "modern dies" in bulletin missleading.
They have very smooth soapy details and a flat surface and no metal flow.
