Hadrian45 viewsCoin: AE Sestertius. Reference: RIC II 740. Mint: Rome circa 134 - 135AD

This was sold via my eBay store to a buyer here in England on the 18th May 2019. It was posted by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed-for (a basic tracked service). Sent from London to High Wycombe. He had bought from me before. However on the 25th he opened an "item not received" case. He did not contact me first to query where the coin was. It is scammers on eBay who normally avoid communication with a seller and immediately open cases in order to get their money back and keep their items.
Yet "1st Class Signed-for" packages are not securely dealt with unlike Royal Mail's "Special Delivery" which has its own separate internal mailing process from all other mail.

This coin is very distinctive, especially the obverse side which has pitting and inactive bronze disease.
This Sestertius type (ADVENTVS AVG) for Hadrian, commemorating his return to Rome after his long journey in the eastern provinces, is not common. Weight: 25.71g. Diameter: 29.5mm.

A dodgy mail worker might be disappointed not to see a Rolex watch in the weighty package but a weird looking medal thingy (not knowing what this is). Hopefully the loss is not down to the buyer (who might have thought to get their money back, treat the old BD on an otherwise finely detailed coin). The buyer subsequently bought two more large rare AE coins from me. I sent those by Special Delivery and they were delivered and the buyer has yet to acknowledge their receipt.

Quietus.jpg
QUIETUS AR22mm 5g Billon Antoninian (aVF/F++, full legends, uncleaned) 66 viewsAV: IMP C FVL QVIETUS P F AVG; Radiate and draped bust right, seen from back.

REV: INDVLGENTIAE AVG. Indulgentia seated left, holding patera and sceptre, star in left field.

EXE: -

REF: RIC V-2 5. quite scarce issue from an Asian mint (possibly Samosata) 260-261AD.

Quietus and Macrianus were raised to the position of Augusti by their father's troops in Asia after Valerian was captured by the persians. They managed to drive the persians out of Antioch. Quietus was murdered in Emesa in late 261AD, in order for the city to avoid being besieged by Gallienus's legions. Rare usurper, his coins are usually rough because of the alloy employed.

PROVENANCE: 2015 ex. Brian Bucklan, USA.

Sent via Regular Airmail 01/02/2015 from the USA. Lost or perhaps stolen.
