Artificial Patina - Epoxy Filled Defects221 viewsThe areas surrounded by red are filled with epoxy material. The surface is painted. The coin is probably genuine and the epoxy filled deep pitting. The coin may be genuine but it is no longer in "collectible" condition.Ilya Prokopov

Artificial Patina - Fake Black Patina Common on Sicilian Fakes131 viewsBronze dilitron, Calciati II p. 185, 80; SNG ANS 533 ff.; SNG Morcom 717; SNG Munchen 1159; SNG Lloyd 1456; BMC Sicily p. 189, 311; HGC 2 1439 (S), F, well centered, green patina, edge crack, light corrosion, Syracuse mint, 344 - 336 B.C.; obverse ZEYΣ EΛEYΘEPIOΣ, laureate head of Zeus Eleutherios left; reverse ΣYPAKOΣION, free horse prancing left; scarce

Reported by Din X who first suspected it due to the fake black patina. This black patina is used by forgers who make cast fakes, most often of attractive larger Sicilian bronze coins. The patina first appears to be thick, but is actually thin and worn on high points. This sometimes indicates a fake patina that should be carefully examined. This coin was confirmed fake by identical twins.

Artificial Patina - Fake Patina Appears Thick But Under Magnification is Evidently Thin198 viewsAgrippina
AE Sestertius 31,9g; 34,7mm

Details of fake patina from a modern forgery. Click to see a larger image. It appears to be a slightly rough thick patina but actually the patina is very thin and the roughness is in the cast metal. The bare metal exposed on the high points show how think the fake patina really is.

Artificial Patina - Four Identical Casts, Four Different Patinas101 viewsThis image demonstrates the talent of the forger in creating different patinas. The patina variation cannot hide that the coins are identical in centering, etc., because they are clones cast from the same mold. These types of forgeries are usually discovered quickly, but most often not until some have sold and the duplicates are discovered in sales records. Always buy from dealers that guarantee authenticity! Joe Sermarini

Artificial Patina - Layered Artificial Patina455 viewsHere are the pictures from two coins with different chronology. The left is Roman provincial struck in 3rd c. AD, and right is Anonymous Bizantine follis. In both we see a thick layer of artificial patina. When examining the substrate on which the patina is applied I found that it is absolutely identical. I used a large optical zoom. Color is red-brown, almost cinnamon. The texture is slightly rough. The structure of the patina is also identical. The way the patina is flaked off and the type of metal beneath it is also identical. Shades of colors are close. I think these counterfeits are the product of the same workshop.Ilya Prokopov

Artificial Patina - Variations on the Same Fake Type416 viewsThe first two coins are cast and artificially patinated. They came to FORVM from two different consignors about the same time, one coin originating on UK ebay. The third image is CNG 158, lot 23. It looks extremely convincing and it is possibly the original from which the fakes were cast rather than a third copy.

The patina of the first specimen is identical to the patina we found on other cast fake sestertii, several of which are are already listed here.

Bronze AE 23, SNG Stancomb 310, SNG BM Black Sea -, VF, nice green patina, weight 10.371g, maximum diameter 23.7mm, die axis 0o, Kallatis? mint, obverse veiled bust of Demeter right, countermark of head of satyr right; reverse BASILEWS KANITOU, torch left and stalk of grain right

Artificial Patina on Forgery - Skillfully Applied2577 viewsThe artificial patina on this forgery was skillfully applied. An artificial patina is often helpful in detecting forgeries. Fortunately most do not look as natural as this patina. This patina would be difficult to detect as artificial on a genuine coin. We know it is fake because the coin is fake.

Often artificial patinas are created by replicating (but speeding up) the actions of nature. Chemically they may be identical to a patina produced by nature. But nature usually creates more variables than a person slapping on chemicals. A natural patina usually has more variaiton in color and texture.

Artificial Patinas - Multiple Copies of a Cast Fake Type - Note the Varieties of Patina712 viewsSince these are all modern casts, the patinas must all be fake. The patinas appear to be thick and rough but in fact they are very thin and the roughness is in the metal itself.

AE29: Septimius Severus
Reverse: KOIN PON NEOKAI METRO: ‘Neokaisareia, metropolis of the koinon of Pontus.’ Seated city goddess of Neokaisareia, surrounded by five standing city goddesses, three on the left and two on the right. A similar coin for Geta was in the Imhoof-Blumer collection, Griechische Munzen #55. Ih-B’s and the BMC’s interpretations are that the city goddesses represent the 6 cities of the Koinon of Pontus, an assumption that there were only 6 cities. Burrell thinks this interpretation is unlikely as there were probably many more than that and the coin is only a symbolic representation of the cities of the koinon to which Neokaisareia belonged.

Green glossy MAT effect copper patina -1168 viewsOn this coin the patina gives a strong glossy effect, and the color is an identical natural green. The chemical reactions are carried out in normal enviroment and the copper carbonates and coproducts are absolutely identical to the natural types.
This kind of patina cannot be melted or washed out by solvents, such as acetone, Isopropyl alcohol, ethylic alcohol neither ether , exane or benzen.
