Eukratides 1 Megas, Crude Fake Imitating the Unique Baktrian Gold 20 Stater118 viewsWeight 150 gms
Diameter 54 mm
The design appears to have been carved into a large diameter bronze blank. Design style is totally incorrect, details and legend are blundered and the 1615 in exergue on the reverse in English numerals is a complete give away for all but the totally blind.
So bad its funny... the crappiest attempt to imitate the unique 169 gm gold 20 stater coin of Eukratides 1 Megas I have ever seen.
The unique authentic coin (I hesitate to say this farce seeks to imitate it) is part of the collection in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:EucratidesStatere.jpg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucratides_I
Regarding the attribution of the authentic 20 stater, from Head's Historia Numorum (http://www.snible.org/coins/hn/bactria.html):
Eucratides, king of Bactria and India, circ. B.C. 200-150. AV Medal- lion of 20 staters’ weight, the largest ancient gold coin in existence, now in the Bibliothèque Nationale at Paris, obv. Bust of king with helmet adorned with bull’s horn and ear, rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ ΕΥΚΡΑΤΙΔΟΥ, The Dioskuri on horseback (Rev. Num., 1867, p. 382).
