Alexander the Great, Drachm, Identical Dies43 views2 fake drachms of Alexander the Great with identical dies sold by the NFS 'ancientground'

The dies for these coins are the same, with identical wear and casting pearls on each, although the second coin is sold as a fouree.

The first one apparently weighs 4.08g and is 17mm in diameter.
The second one apparently weighs 3.81g and is also 17mm in diameter.

The seller also notes;
Authentic: 100% (although I can't see how a coin could be 50% real or 90% fake). The same seller has sold at least 4 of the same copies in less than one year.

"This fake Alexander drachm as been sold repeatedly as authentic on eBay by a number of different sellers. It appears to be a Bulgarian School forgery. Sometimes this piece has a COPY countermark on the edge and is sold as a replica. Apparently the Bulgarian workshop responsible for it sells it both ways ... to meet the needs of different markets, it seems. The piece you point to appears to be a cast of one of the pressed copies made in Bulgaria."
Currently selling on ebay by seller ID javeedpersia, titled "Greek Macedonian Kingdom Alexander The Great AR Drachm"

I strongly suspect that this is a modern cast fake. It was being sold amongst a whole host of other published and known fakes. I cannot find a matching example but wanted to log the coin anyway.

From this thread: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=112729
"the style is so crude and the Memphis tetradrachms are famous for their artistic merit and their extraordinary good style".
The reverse of the fake Memphis tetradrachm is too flat (should be more concave) and the small flan cracks on the Memphis fake tetradrachm are indicating pressing.
So imho a pressed fake of modern dies.

Base metal.

This is a published fake. It is number 6 on Plate 24 in the The American Numismatic Society, Museum Notes 30 in an article called Myrina and Related Forgeries. It is from Alexandria Troas, with the head of Apollo left and Apollo Smintheus standing right. The listed forgery is in silver, but the coin in this topic is an exact match to the one illustrated on the plate.
