Delphi, silver stater222 viewsAmphyctionic League.
Phocis, Delphi. Stater 336 BC.
Obv:- Drape bust of Demeter left
Rev:- Apollo on omphalos. Cithara by him, tripod before him at left. Laurel staff. And just look at all the lovely knotted woollen fillets covering the omphalos.
Kraay & Hirmer, Greek Coins, pl. 147, no. 462. On p. 338, Kraay says that the specimen Hirmer photographed is in Athens. This is, as I recall, a rare, rare coin. Kraay referes to E. J. P. Raven, 'The Amphictionic Coinage of Delphi, 335-334 BC' in NC, 1950, pp. 11, ff.
An inferior die pair is Sayles II, p. 38
At 1:1 it also is illus. in Kraay, Archaic & Classical, pl. 22, 414 and discussed on p. 122; on p. 360, he says that the specimen he illustrates is a didrachm.
