Italy - Mussolini
Fantasy 20 lire coin of Italy, 1943, 20.5g, 35mm, AR plated AE
obv: MVSSOLINI MCMXLIII helmeted, collared head of Mussolini, l.
rev: ITALIA head of lion, r., behind top of axehead of fasces, dominating foreground, bundle to left with bands reading MCMXVIII (upper) and MCMXXVIII (lower), A VI below bottom band – referring to dates of end of WWI, 10th anniv. of victory, and year 6 of fascism, respectively; L 20 R in left field (20 Lire, Rome mint), and on axe blade: MEGLIO VIVERE VN GIORNO DA LEONE CHE CENTRO ANNI DA PECORA – quote from Mussolini “Better to live a day as a lion than a hundred years as a lamb.”
It has been suggested that this fantasy is based upon an unissued pattern coin, but this is unverified and doubtful as the rev is identical to the rev of the commemorative 20 lire of 1928 depicting Vittorio Emanuelle III on the obv in a portrait similar in style to that of Mussolini on this fantasy type (cf. KM70). These fantasies were struck in the 1970s and possibly later and exist in AR, AR plated AE and brass; a gold version exists but denominated 100 lire.
Also, smaller, but otherwise identical versions, exist in gold measuring 17mm and 20mm, both denominated 20 lire; and 23mm, denominated 50 lire
