Most unusual is this adoption of Niger's attribute 'IVSTVS'. It was used for a very short time and replaced with VICTOR SEVER. The use of AVS was later replaced with AVG. BMC 338 is a die duplicate of this coin but is missing the right legend leading to the listing error. |

Earliest examples of the common type showing a trophy of arms expand the legend to include the word TROPAEA. Later coins use only INVICTO IMP.

Several coins from the early issue from 'Emesa' show signs of being overstruck on earlier coins. This example with 'CPESC' visible behind the head at 10 o'clock was overstruck on a coin of Pescennius Niger. Last uses of this obverse bear consul date to 194 on the reverse. It seems likely these dies were created to use up the existing 193 AD portrait dies. |

Another coin with IICOS on the reverse is this remarkable legionary. A die duplicate in the British Museum collection is doublestruck making the legend unclear and leading to a slight error in listing. Most interesting is the reverse die being dated both COS in exergue and IICOS at right.
