Bronze Coins of Julia Domna
The bronze series follows the general pattern of the Rome mint silver issues. Some years saw great numbers
of bronze coins issued while others saw very few. Denominations were the sestertius (1/4 denarius), the dupondius (1/2 sestertius)
and the as (1/2 dupondius). The as was struck in red copper alloy while the larger two denominations used yellow brass (orichalcum).
After 213 AD the diadem on the dupondius further distinguished it from the similarly sized as. Frequently toning and patina obscure the
original color of the metal making it hard to identify the two denominations.
