My Favorite Coins

Castulo, Spain, AE28, 2nd-1st century BC
While significantly under the control of Rome, Spain issued a considerable series of interesting coins that are really neither Greek nor Roman. Of the few examples in my collection, this is my favorite. Like many of its type, my coin is weakly struck to the point that the legends under the sphinx are off flan. The male head is, to the best of my knowledge, unidentified. The coin made my list of favorites by being so evenly struck that the flan retains on the reverse its distinctive taper from the blank being cast in a shallow cup cut in stone. A better strike would have flattened the taper erasing the evidence of how the flans were prepared (and probably gaining the legends). The coin is more educational than it is a fine specimen but I find it interesting and attractive.
