Septimius Severus & Julia Domna Æ35 Stratonicaea - Hecate reverse
While it might seem that a large coin with confronted portraits might be worthy of our humble list, it is also a fact that few coins in such poor condition are usually considered for favorite status. It this case, it is exactly that horrid condition that makes this coin a favorite of mine. Most specimens of this coin have a small counterstamp of a young boy's head placed on the obverse between Septimius and Julia. On this one, the countermark has been removed extremely roughly leaving the most ragged hole I have seen on an ancient coin. Traditional sources say this countermarked boy was Caracalla. Perhaps someone did not like him??? We are told that Caracalla ordered images of Geta destroyed after his murder but I have not seen a suggestion that the countermark might be Geta. The coin asks more questions than we can answer.

As a bonus, the reverse shows a standing figure of Hecate, a goddess unusual on coins. Unfortunately, the removal of the countermark also removed her face.
