Lucius Verus, 7 March 161 - February 169 A.D.

Lucius Verus was the co-emperor of Marcus Aurelius, and married his daughter Lucilla. Although held in high esteem by Marcus, he had a reputation for loose living and few mourned his death in 169 A.D.

In 162, Lucius Verus began war with the Parthians after Vologases IV invaded Syria and Armenia. The Romans would be victorious but the returning army would bring back a pandemic known as the Antonine Plague. The plague would significantly depopulate the entire Roman Empire.

During his famous travels, Hadrian visited Judaea and initiated reconstruction of Jerusalem on the Roman model, with a temple of Jupiter replacing the Jewish Temple and restrictions on circumcision. This triggered the Bar-Kochba war, lasting three years and brutal beyond imagination. Hadrian sought to eradicate Judaism and renamed the city Aelia Capitolina, as inscribed on this rare coin.

The legion VI Ferrata, the "Ironclad", was an old legion of Caesar's that fought for Antony. In 168 A.D., Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus established their headquarters at Aquileia. They then crossed the Alps into Pannonia and, with paid help from German tribes and the Scythians, subdued the Marcomanni who had invaded Italy in 167.
