Roman Military Mints in Macedonia

During the Republic, Roman military mints struck imitative types to make local payments. Examples struck in Macedonia include Thasian and Histiaia imitations. Because they are crude, these types were once mistaken for Celtic issues.

This Dionysos / Herakles type was first struck by Thasos itself on the island and in its continental territories in the South of the Balkans, c. 168 - 148 B.C. After Rome took control of the area, "Thasian" types were struck by Roman authorities, c. 148 - 80 B.C., mainly in Macedonia but also, perhaps, by mobile military mints on campaigns. Imitatives were also struck by at least several tribal groups (mainly Celtic or mixed enclaves) from as early as 120 - 100 B.C. to about 20 - 10 B.C.SH72546. Silver tetradrachm, Prokopov Thasos, group XIV, monogram 24, 1105 (V CD4 / R 803); SNG Cop 1046, VF, attractive style, some areas of weak strike, a few marks, weight 16.805 g, maximum diameter 32.9 mm, die axis 0o, Roman provincial or military mint, c. 148 - 80 B.C.; obverse head of Dionysos right, wearing taenia and wreathed in flowering ivy; reverse HPAKΛEOYΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ ΘAΣIΩN, Herakles standing half left, nude but for Nemean lion's skin on left arm, resting right hand on grounded club before him, left hand on hip, monogram inner left; ex Forum (2003); SOLD

L. Manlius Torquatus was proquaestor to Sulla during the Mithridatic war (he was later Consul - 65 B.C.); this issue was struck for the civil war in Italy 82 B.C.SH85110. Silver denarius, RSC I Manlia 4; BMCRR II p. 461, 5; Russo RBW 1386; Crawford 367/5; Sydenham 757; SRCV I 286, EF, lustrous, weak legends, reverse a little off center, edge cracks, nearly as struck except areas of slightest porosity, weight 3.926 g, maximum diameter 19.0 mm, die axis 90o, military mint, 82 B.C.; obverse head of Roma right, PRO Q (proquaestor) downward behind, L MANLI upward before; reverse Sulla walking in a quadriga right, holding reins in right hand and caduceus in left, crowned by Victory flying above, L SVLLA IM (imperator) in exergue; SOLD
