Spouted cups such as this are called in Persian today shakh-i hajamat ("the horn of the cupper"). They were used in medicine for bloodletting. The cup was placed on the skin and by sucking on the tube the physician would create a vacuum that would pull the blood to the surface. The cup would then be removed and a small incision made to allow the blood to flow.

The number of Islamic glass jetons that still exist indicates the original number vastly exceeded the number needed as coin weights. Combined with an almost total absensce of copper coinage, this seems to indicate glass jetons replaced copper as currency.
