England, James I, 1603 - 1625
|United| |Kingdom|, |England,| |James| |I,| |1603| |-| |1625|, James was King of Scots as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the English and Scottish crowns on 24 March 1603. He became King of Scotland at the age of thirteen months, succeeding his mother Mary, Queen of Scots, who had been compelled to abdicate in his favor. He succeeded the last Tudor monarch of England and Ireland, Elizabeth I, who died without issue. He reigned in all three kingdoms for 22 years, often using the title King of Great Britain and Ireland, until his death in 1625 at the age of 58. He based himself in England (the largest of the three realms) from 1603. James began the Plantation of Ulster and of North America. Under James, the "Golden Age" of Elizabethan literature and drama continued, with writers such as William Shakespeare contributing to a flourishing literary culture. He sponsored the translation of the Bible that was named after him: the Authorized King James Version.
