Each of these coins was struck with a single letter of a codeword embedded in the mintmark. Each officina (workshop) at the mint was assigned one letter of a codeword. When the coins of each embedded codeword type are assembled in officina order, the embedded letters spell out the codewords AEQVITI (at Rome), and AEQVIT and later EQVITI (at Ticinum).
