Zoe was Leo VI's fourth wife, and the one to finally deliver him a heir, Constantine VII. After both both her husband and his brother Alexander died, her young son became emperor. Still a minor, Constantine VII was first under the regency of Patriarch Nicholas Mysticus, but soon after Zoe took control. She did not prove to be a good leader, as the Bulgarians led by Simeon repeatedly crushed the Byzantine armies.
