Flavius Basiliscus was brother of Verina, wife of the emperor Leo I. When Leo was succeeded by Zeno, Verina plotted in favor of her lover. Her scheme forced Zeno to flee Constantinople on 9 January 475, but instead her brother Basiliscus seized the throne. Basiliscus then angered Verina by executing her lover, angered religious leaders by supporting an unpopular sect, angered his leading generals by foolish decisions and angered the populace. After only 20 months, Zeno returned to Constantinople to retake his throne without a fight. Having promised not to shed Basiliscus' blood, after a year of exile in Cappadocia, Zeno executed Basiliscus and his family without bloodshed. They were starved to death.
