Michael VII Ducas, 24 October 1071 - 24 March 1078 A.D.

Michael's reign was a period of disasters and territorial losses. Unable to face these challenges, Michael VII abdicated and lived as a monk for the last 12 years of his life.

The references list many slight variations for this type (legend variations, different ornamentation on the nimbus, gospels and labarum, a pellet or no pellet on the labarum shaft, the number of pearls on the emperor's collar, etc.). Some of these details may have had meaning as secret control marks, but some were probably the unimportant whims of the die engraver.
