The former Romanian royal family, a branch of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty, ruled Romania until 1947, when the last king, Michael, was deposed from his throne in a Stalinist take-over and the country became a socialist republic.

Grandfather of Dracula! Mircea I was described as the "bravest and ablest of the Christian princes," by the historian Leunclavius. He was father to Vlad II Dracul and grandfather of Mircea II, Vlad Tepes, Vlad Calugarul and Radu the Handsome, all rulers of Wallachia. His grandson, Vlad Tepes (the Impaler), one of the most notorious leaders in history, was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's "Dracula.
