United States, Buffalo or Indian Head Nickel, 5 Cents, "Dateless" 1913 - 1938

|United| |States|, |United| |States,| |Buffalo| |or| |Indian| |Head| |Nickel,| |5| |Cents,| |"Dateless"| |1913| |-| |1938|
The Buffalo nickel or Indian Head nickel is a popular distinctly American coin type struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938. The designer, James Earl Fraser, modeled the head of the Native American as a composite of three chiefs who had posed for him years earlier: Iron Tail of the Sioux (Custer’s opponent at Little Big Horn), Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and John Big Tree of the Seneca nation. The buffalo (North American bison) used as model was Black Diamond from the New York Central Park Zoo. The placement of the date on a raised area of the design caused it to wear heavily in circulation, creating many "dateless" Buffalo Nickels.
SP18190. U.S.A. Buffalo Nickel, worn dateless, no acid dates, 75% copper and 25% nickel, plain edge, type 2, weight 5.000 g, maximum diameter 21.2 mm, obverse profile of an American Indian right, hair braided and tied below his ear, wearing a simple headdress with two feathers, LIBERTY curving downward upper right, date over tiny F (for the designer, Fraser) on shoulder; reverse a male American bison standing left on a mound, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcing above, E PLURIBUS UNUM (Latin: out of many, one - the motto of the U.S.) in three lines upper right, FIVE CENTS over the mintmark (no mark = Philadelphia, D = Denver, S = San Francisco) in a recessed exergue below the mound; random selection from the same lot as the coins in the photograph, presented in a flip with a tag including all the information provided here, ONE COIN; $1.00 (€.94)
