Mysia, Parion, c. 129 - 45 B.C.
|Parium|, |Mysia,| |Parion,| |c.| |129| |-| |45| |B.C.|, Founded in 709 B.C., the ancient city of Parion is now the village of Kemer in the township of Biga in Canakkale province of Turkey. In the Hellenistic period, it came under the domain of Lysimachus, and subsequently the Attalid dynasty. The last Attalid king, Attalus III died without issue and bequeathed the kingdom to the Roman Republic in 133 B.C. In 45 B.C. Julius Caesar refounded Parium as Colonia Iulia Pia Pariana to settle some of his retiring veterans. We believe the legend on this coin indicates it was struck under Roman rule prior to its promotion to a colonia.

BMC Mysia p. 101, 72 (different magistrate); SNG BnF -; SNGvA -, aVF, green patina, some corrosion, light earthen deposits, Parion (Kemer, Canakkale, Turkey) mint, weight 6.287g, maximum diameter 21.1mm, die axis 0o, c. 129 - 45 B.C.; obverse bust of Artemis right, wearing stephane, draped, quiver and bow over shoulder; reverse eagle standing right, wings open, ΠA-PI/A/NΩN clockwise from 10:00 but last two letters horizontal in right field, MHTPO/ΔΩPOY (magistrate) in two lines below, all in a laurel wreath; extremely rare; SOLD
