He named it after his wife Thessalonike, daughter of Philip II and half-sister of Alexander the Great. On 22 June 168 B.C., Lucius Aemilius Paullus defeated the Macedonian King Perseus at the battle of Pydna, and Macedonia came under Roman rule.
