Julia Mamaea, Augusta 13 March 222 - February or March 235 A.D.
Julia Mamaea was Severus Alexander's mother, the power behind the throne, and largely responsible for the recovery of Rome during her son's rule. The military was, however, offended at being controlled by a woman. Julia Mamaea and Severus Alexander were murdered by mutinous soldiers led by Maximinus I.RB94229. Bronze dupondius (or as), cf. RIC IV 677, BMCRE VI 495, Cohen IV 22, SRCV II 8243, Hunter III - (all refs for as but the weight of our coin is that of a dupondius), F, dark green patina, deposits, Rome mint, weight 13.503g, maximum diameter 28.6mm, die axis 0o, c. 228 A.D.; obverse IVLIA MAMAEA AVGVSTA, draped bust right, wearing stephane, hair in waved horizontal ridges, looped plait at back of neck, no crescent; reverse FELICITAS PVBLICA (to the good fortune / happiness of the public), Felicitas standing facing, head left, raising caduceus in right hand, legs crossed, leaning with left arm on column, S - C (senatus consulto) flanking across field; SOLD
