Macrinus and Diadumenian, 11 April 217 - 8 June 218 A.D., Marcianopolis, Moesia Inferior
Renamed by Trajan after his sister, Ulpia Marciana, Marcianopolis was an important strategic center for centuries. The city was repeatedly destroyed by barbarian raids (Goths, Huns, Avars and others) but also was repeatedly rebuilt and prospered. During Valens' conflict with the Goths, Marcianopolis was a temporary capital of the empire and the largest city in Thrace. An Avar raid destroyed the city in 614 or 615.RP92890. Bronze pentassarion, H-J Marcianopolis 6.24.38.3/7 (unlisted die pair), Moushmov 571, Varbanov I 1221 (R3) var. (obv. leg.), AMNG I 774 var. (same), BMC -, SNG Cop -, Choice F, full legends, excellent portraits, brown tone with brassy high points, bumps and marks, central depressions, Markianopolis (Devnya, Bulgaria) mint, weight 14.304g, maximum diameter 28.1mm, die axis 0o, consular legate Pontaianus, 217 - 218 A.D.; obverse AVT K OΠEΛΛI CEV MAKPEINOC K M OΠEΛΛI ANTΩNEINOC, laureate head of Macrinus right confronted with bare-head of Diadumenian left; reverse VΠ ΠONTIANOY MAPKIANOΠOΛEITΩN (OY and AP ligate), Tyche standing facing, head left, holding rudder by tiller in right hand, cornucopia in left hand, E (mark of value) upper left; apparently unpublished legend variety, this is the first specimen of this type (including normal legend variants) handled by FORVM; rare variety; SOLD
