Antoninus Pius, August 138 - 7 March 161 A.D., Roman Provincial Egypt
|Roman| |Egypt|, |Antoninus| |Pius,| |August| |138| |-| |7| |March| |161| |A.D.,| |Roman| |Provincial| |Egypt|, Harpocrates' name was a Hellenization of the Egyptian Har-pa-khered, meaning "Horus the Child." In Egyptian mythology, Horus, the son of Isis and Osiris, represented the newborn sun, rising each day at dawn. Egyptian statues depicted Horus, as a naked boy with his fingertip just below his lips. For Egyptians, this gesture meant simply that he was a child. Misunderstanding this sign, the Greeks and Romans made Harpocrates the god of silence and secrecy (and also an embodiment of hope, according to Plutarch).
