Annius Plocamus, a Roman freedman, visited the island, spurring Sri Lanka to send a delegation to Rome during the reign of Claudius. A Roman named Sopatros traveled to Sri Lanka, probably in the 5th century. The ancient port of Mantota may have been an important port of call between China and Rome.
