Duchy of Savoy, Italy, Carlo I, 1482 - 1490
| The Duchy of Savoy (Italian: Ducato di Savoia, French: Duché de Savoie) was created in 1416 when the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund raised the County of Savoy into a duchy for Amadeus VIII. The duchy was an Imperial fief, subject of the Holy Roman Empire with a vote in the Imperial Diet. Chambéry was the capital until 1562, when it was moved to Turin. Throughout its history, it was ruled by the House of Savoy and formed a part of the larger Savoyard state, but it was at times occupied by France. In 1860, under the terms of the Treaty of Turin, the Duchy of Savoy was annexed by France. The last Duke of Savoy, Victor Emmanuel II, became King of Italy. |  |
