Kyzikus, Mysia, c. 169 - 180 A.D.
|Cyzicus|, |Kyzikus,| |Mysia,| |c.| |169| |-| |180| |A.D.|, In Greek mythology, Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, is also called Kore, which simply means "maiden" in Greek. She is best known today for the myth of her abduction and marriage to Hades, and for her annual descent into the underworld as the cause of the seasons. Homer tell us that as queen of the underworld, she delivered the curses of men upon the souls of the dead. Her epithet Kore Soteira "the savior maiden" perhaps relates to the promise of a better afterlife through participating in the Eleusinian Mysteries, dedicated to the worship of Persephone and her mother, Demeter.
