VOT P R on the shield abbreviates, Vota Populi Romani, which translates, "Vows (prayers) of the Roman people." RIC notes the design on the altar gradually becomes more elaborate (more pellets) throughout this London issue. The first variety was a plain rhombus. This design with five pellets was the last altar variation of the issue.
